This month we feature South Dublin volunteer Suresh who volunteers with Age Action. Suresh tells us of his gratitude to be able to make a difference in the community by helping Over 55’s learn basic computer skills.
In this modern world where technology keep on upgrading, faster lifestyle, cyclic life and even from small kids who are learning technology from 1st standard itself. All the big companies want everything online shopping, banking etc.
But no one thought about the “Older generation”, who is going to educate them?
Here’s where Age Action’s Getting Started programme comes in to provide basic computer skills to the over 55s. I always wanted to serve the nation with some kind of service and when I heard about this programme I immediately applied for it.
Age action provided a well designed training to make me a good teacher and here I am. I have been tutoring in Celbridge Library for 2 hours a week and am really happy to be part of it.
When I see older people coming with blank faces about technology I really feel sorry that they are missing out on so many possibilities. But in 2 to 3 weeks we turn this around!
After seeing the difference we can make, I became a permanent volunteer and 2 hours a week is really worth it to teach others.
Most of us know the basics of computers and by volunteering each individual can make a large contribution. Keep recruiting and get more tutors. I hope this will inspire many more to come forward as well. Thanks to Age Action for giving me this opportunity.
