We’re already halfway through National Volunteering Week, and today’s amazing story is a perfect example of how sharing our skills can help Build Community Together. It’s a reminder that each of us has something valuable to offer — and that every contribution can have a big impact.

Here is Ibrahim’s story

My name is Ibrahim Ajao from Nigeria — As someone with a Bachelor’s degree in Geology and a Master’s degree in Geography from University College Dublin (UCD), I’ve always been passionate about the environment and how we care for the spaces we live in. Volunteering with Clondalkin Tidy Towns (CTT) has given me a chance to live out that passion, not only by contributing meaningfully but also by applying what I’ve learned through my studies.

Since graduating, it’s been a bit challenging to find a role directly in my field. That said, I’ve been incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with CTT. Volunteering here has given me a real platform to use my academic background, especially through projects like the Greenspace Analysis, where I helped map and assess the availability of green areas across the community. It’s a great feeling, not only to support the group with planning and environmental insight but also continuing to grow professionally by gaining hands-on experience.

Each week, I’ve joined the team in tidying streets, planting flowers, maintaining public spaces, and raising awareness about the importance of a clean and green environment. It’s amazing how much impact small efforts can make when done consistently and with care. As an asylum seeker, I feel a deep sense of appreciation for the welcome I’ve received in Ireland. Volunteering has been my way of giving back, of saying thank you, and of finding belonging. Through it, I’ve met kind people, made friendships, and stayed connected to my passion while giving something of value to the community where I lived. I hope my story encourages others, especially those who may be new to Ireland or unsure of where to start, to get involved. Volunteering is more than service; it’s a shared journey of growth, inclusion, and purpose
