Today, we’re excited to bring you the second inspiring volunteer story of National Volunteering Week. Come along as we celebrate the incredible people who help strengthen our communities through volunteering.
Here is Parker’s story
My name is Parker, and I’m originally from China. I came to Ireland last September to pursue a Master’s degree. Before arriving, I had already been thinking about getting involved in volunteer work. Volunteering isn’t very common in my home country, so I was eager to experience something new — to give back, meet people, and become part of a community.
Just a week after I arrived in Ireland, I started searching for volunteer opportunities. I was truly impressed by how well-developed and organized the volunteer networks are here. The culture of mutual support and strong community bonds really stood out to me.
I was fortunate to begin volunteering with Age Action in November. Helping older adults build confidence in using digital devices is a cause close to my heart. My motivation stems from my experience with my late grandmother, whom I loved deeply. I saw how frustrating and isolating it can be for elderly people when they can’t access the same information or technology as others. It often leaves them feeling left behind and lonely.
Working with older individuals through Age Action has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing their progress — even small steps — and witnessing their smiles brings me so much joy. It makes me feel connected, not just to them, but to Irish society as a whole. Ireland has some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met, and through this volunteer experience, I’ve felt more integrated and welcomed into the community.
I’m truly grateful to Age Action for giving me this meaningful and beautiful opportunity.
