It is our final story from National Volunteering Week and shows how volunteering really connects people and brings communities together.
Here is Oladipupo’s story:
“Volunteering with the South Dublin Community Volunteers has been one of the most transformative parts of my life in Ireland. Since I began in January 2025, I’ve taken part in several community events – from St. Patrick’s Day in Clondalkin to the Bloom Festival, FoodCloud activities, and many other service projects. Each experience helped me grow, connect, and rediscover myself.
Through these programmes, I met wonderful people who welcomed me with warmth and sincerity. The friendships I built became a source of strength, especially during a time when living alone in Ireland often felt isolating. Volunteering gave me a place to belong, a reason to step out, and a community that made the loneliness easier to bear.
The work also brought out leadership qualities I didn’t realise I had. Whether supporting events or stepping up when needed, I became more confident, responsible, and proactive. I learned how to communicate better, work with diverse groups, and lead with empathy.
Over time, the community volunteering events became more than a place where I volunteered – it became my sanctuary. A space of joy, peace, and connection. A place where I felt valued, grounded, and understood. Volunteering didn’t just help me serve others; it helped me find purpose, rebuild my confidence, and shape a new chapter of my life in Ireland.”
