We are delighted to bring you our third story for National Volunteering Week. This truly exemplifies this year’s theme of ‘From Every Corner, For Every Cause‘ and is a wonderful example of feeling involved.
Here is Rita’s story:
“Volunteering as a Parent Mentor with YMCA has been a meaningful and rewarding experience, both personally and professionally. After finding a bit more space in my life while raising a young family and nearing the completion of my psychology studies, I felt a strong desire to give back to my community. However, volunteering is not only about giving – it is equally about receiving. For me, it has created a valuable sense of balance. There is a deep sense of fulfilment in knowing that my time and effort can make a difference in someone’s life, even in small ways. At the same time, this role has given me something important in return.
As I am no longer working in a traditional office, volunteering has given me a sense of personal space and identity outside my family and daily responsibilities. It allows me to step into a different role, one where I can connect with others, contribute meaningfully, and continue to grow.
One of the most valuable aspects of this experience has been the opportunity to engage with like-minded people. Being surrounded by individuals who share similar values has allowed me to learn, reflect, and exchange ideas in a supportive and enriching environment. These connections have been both motivating and reassuring.
Ultimately, volunteering has shown me the importance of balance between giving and receiving, supporting others while also nurturing personal growth. It is not just an act of contribution, but a shared experience that benefits both the individual and the community.”
