Today our story comes from Claire McCallion, who tells us how volunteering just one hour a week has provided a meaningful opportunity to make a difference with Age Action, connecting with others whilst staying at home.
“Sitting at home during Covid-19 trying to ‘come together by staying apart’ was really hard for me. You would see and hear of loads of people out volunteering in their community and at testing centres but that just wasn’t possible for me while working full-time. Then I saw a call out on the Dublin Volunteer app for Online Tutors for Age Action which was an hour a week from home. I jumped at the chance to get involved.
I have tutored a number of learners now and have talked them through everything from turning on an iPad to designing mind maps to researching family history! It has been wonderful to help learners who are living alone, figure out how to use their iPad to see their families.
I found that I looked forward to my hour volunteering every week as much the learners did!”
